Does your current office provide enough space for your employees to do their jobs? Does the layout and design of the office improve functionality? If you have outgrown your previous space, consider investing in a new property. You can easily look online for commercial properties in the area.

Sometimes it’s not the size of the space that’s the problem but how that space is used. Instead of cramming a bunch of cubicles together, remove them and allow employees to have an open workspace where they can easily collaborate. If you don’t have a designated area for your staff to relax and unwind, consider a break room or lounge area where they can kick back during their down time. Design an office that is fun, unique, and functional for your staff.

SHOW APPRECIATION

A positive work environment goes beyond the office space and design. It also requires a lot of effort on your end. Your employees want to know that you appreciate the job they do. While you don’t have to throw an awards ceremony every month to recognize the greats, you do need to find ways to show your appreciation. When tasks are completed, be thankful. Should a staff member go above and beyond pull them aside and let them know you noticed and appreciate those efforts. Properly promote those who deserve it. ENCOURAGE FUN

Yes, your staff was hired to do a job, but that doesn’t mean that coming to work shouldn’t be fun from time to time. Encourage your staff to have fun, let loose, and just be happy sometimes. Come up with company theme days like dress down Friday or silly hat Wednesday. Host small company events like ice cream on Fridays during the summers or an annual company picnic.

DEVELOP PERSONALIZED RELATIONSHIPS

While you don’t want your staff to get too comfortable, you also don’t want to develop distance or discomfort between them and yourself. Your employees should feel like they can come to you freely without feeling awkward. Develop relationships with your employees. Ask them about things outside of work like their families or even how their weekend was. Communicate frequently and often and let them know that even though you’re the boss, you’re also human.

In doing each of these things you can improve your current work environment for the better. Remember, your employees spend more time at work than they do anywhere else. As a result, the work environment should be a place that not only allows them to get their jobs done but that makes them feel safe, at peace, and comfortable. When in a positive environment not only are your employees going to work their best, but this positivity and productivity will reflect well to outsiders including clients, customers, vendors, investors and potential employees.
